I am now a not-a-little-bit-happy owner of a Honda Giorno scooter.
Other than me being quite happy about the cost of fuel for this thing, and my decreased footprint and all that pride-inducing stuff, I found the pulley-based CVT (continuously variable transmission) that it has to be ingenious.
